Argentina completed a perfect Group J campaign with a 3-1 victory over Jordan, making it three wins from three and sealing top spot on nine points.
While Lionel Scaloni’s side conceded their first goal of the tournament, they never looked in serious danger as they continued to underline their status as one of the favourites in the United States.
Already assured of qualification, Argentina still approached the contest with plenty of intensity and were rewarded with the opening goal after a confident start. Their slick passing and movement caused Jordan problems throughout the first half, allowing them to establish control before extending their advantage through a Lautaro Martinez penalty after 31 minutes.
Jordan did manage to pull a goal back, becoming the first team to breach Argentina’s defence at this World Cup and briefly raising hopes of an unlikely comeback. However, any nerves were settled as Argentina restored their two-goal cushion through substitute Lionel Messi.
Introduced from the bench during the second half, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner marked his appearance with yet another goal, continuing his impressive tournament despite not starting the match. It was a reminder that Argentina possess match-winners all over the pitch, even when rotating their squad.
The victory ensured Argentina finished top of Group J with a maximum nine points and head into the Round of 32 full of confidence, where they will take on Cape Verde. Jordan, meanwhile, exit the competition without a point after suffering a third successive defeat.
