Germany were able to overcome Ivory Coast and secure their passage through to the Round of 32 thanks to a brace from substitute Deniz Undav.
Ivory Coast had taken the lead in the first-half through Franck Kessie only for Undav’s brace to turn the game on it’s head after the break.
Ivory Coast arguably started the brighter of the two teams, yet it was Germany who had the first real chance. Kai Havertz connected with a Florian Wirtz cross, but the Arsenal man’s header was brilliantly stopped by Yahia Fofana in the Ivory Coast goal.
From there, die Mannschaft started to take control. Jamal Musiala and Felix Nmecha came close with long-range efforts, while Aleksandar Pavolvic had a goal ruled out for a foul on Fofana.
However, it was Ivory Coast who eventually did break the deadlock.
The dangerman Yan Diomande burst down the left hand side and flashed a low cross into the box to Amad Diallo. The Manchester United man couldn’t sort his feet out quickly enough to finish and his shot was blocked by Nathaniel Brown, but only landed at the feet of skipper Franck Kessie who couldn’t miss.
Germany thought they had an equaliser for a moment after a mix-up at the back saw Ivory Coast cede possession and Florian Wirtz lay a pass on for Kai Havertz to finish. However, the play was brought back for a foul in the build-up.
Everything seemed set-up for die Mannschaft to come back into the game in the second half, but in fact Ivory Coast looked more like extending their lead. Kessie had an attempt blocked, while Christ Inao Oulai blazed over the bar after some great work in midfield and a nice one-two with Ange-Yoan Bonny.
Kai Havertz had a fine chance to equalise when Fofana misread a corner kick, but the Arsenal man nodded wide when he really should have hit the net.
But it wasn’t long before the scores were level. Substitute Nadiem Amiri put a terrific cross into the box which was met by Deniz Undav who volleyed home from close range.
As time ticked away, Fofana continued his fine shot-stopping performance, getting down to push Brown’s effort round the post and stopping another low shot from Amiri as we entered injury time.
Eventually though, the pressure told. A terrific line-breaking pass found Deniz Undav who turned and calmly finished with his left foot to condemn Ivory Coast to an undeserved defeat.
