England continue into the round-of-16 at the 2026 World Cup but they needed a late brace from captain Harry Kane to overcome DR Congo in Atlanta.
Brian Cipenga’s early goal shocked the majority of supporters inside the Mercedes-Benz Stadium but after much toiling, England eventually found two late goals from captain fantastic Harry Kane to secure a 2-1 win and a route through to the next round.

After a very low start for England, DR Congo took the lead with their first shot on goal, as captain Chancel Mbemba found Brian Cipenga with an excellent switch pass. The livewire winger had enough time to fire in a low shot which squeezed past Jordan Pickford into the bottom corner.
A disjointed-looking England improved after the first-half hydration break, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka clearing an attempt from his former Manchester United team-mate Marcus Rashford off the line.
The Leopards almost made it two soon after though, as Yoane Wissa turned Nathanael Mbuku’s low cross against the post when he really should’ve scored.
Harry Kane had a penalty appeal turned down and goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, who was in fine fettle in the first-half, kept out a Jude Bellingham header in acrobatic fashion.
After a few half-sightings of an equaliser in the second half, it was Kane who finally made the breakthrough, converting Anthony Gordon’s cross with a header that Mpasi arguably should’ve kept out.
One quickly turned to two for Kane though as he was fed once again by Gordon on the edge of the box, evaded two DR Congo defenders and fired a lethal right-footed finish into the roof of the net to secure a huge comeback win for the Three Lions.
