DR Congo booked their place in the Round of 32 with a superb 3-1 comeback victory over Uzbekistan, sealing a historic first World Cup win and setting up a meeting with England after finishing third in Group K on four points.

The Leopards knew only a victory would be enough to extend their tournament and they made the worst possible start when Eldor Shomurodov fired Uzbekistan into an early lead. The Central Asian side defended that advantage well before the break and looked on course to end their debut World Cup campaign on a high.

Sebastien Desabre’s side emerged with far greater intensity after the interval and began to pin Uzbekistan back inside their own half. Their pressure was eventually rewarded when Yoane Wissa calmly converted from the penalty spot after a clumsy challenge inside the area, bringing DR Congo level with just over 20 minutes remaining.

That goal completely changed the momentum of the contest. DR Congo continued to pour forward and deservedly took the lead through substitute Fiston Mayele, who finished confidently after another flowing attack. Uzbekistan struggled to respond as the Leopards controlled the closing stages, and Wissa wrapped up both the victory and his brace in stoppage time with a composed finish on the counter-attack.

The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations as DR Congo secured a place in the knockout stages for the first time in their history. Their four-point haul proved enough to finish as one of the best third-placed teams, earning a Round of 32 clash against England in Atlanta, while Uzbekistan’s first World Cup campaign came to an end with three defeats from three matches.
