Ivory Coast cruised into the knock-out stages of the World Cup with a 2-0 win over Curacao thanks to a brace from Nicolas Pepe.
Les Elephants took an early lead when Yan Diomande showed quick feet and pounced on an Curacao defensive error to slide a low cross into the box for Nicolas Pepe to finish.
Curacao came close to an equaliser almost immediately, Jurien Gari dragging a long-range effort wide of Yahia Fofana’s right post.
Diomande was at it again before long, again showing quick feet down the left wing and flashing a low cross towards Adam Diallo, but his own team-mate Franck Kessie got in his way and between them, les Elephants couldn’t find the finish.
The Blue Wave had a couple of half-chances to draw level before half-time. Tahith Chong flashed a shot over the bar and Leandro Bacuna evaded a couple of tackles but pulled his shot wide of the near post.
After the break, they came close again through a fearsome Sherel Floranus. Unfortunately for the Curacao defender, the shot lifted just over the bar – but he and his team certainly had Ivory Coast worried.
But instead, it was Ivory Coast who got the second. Ibrahim Sangare wighted a perfect through ball to Pepe who took the ball in his stride and curled a confident finish into the far corner to confirm Curacao’s exit from the tournament.
