Estadio BBVA Stadium: History

Having opened in 2015, Estadio BBVA has served as Monterrey’s home ground for over 10 years now, and has provided the backdrop to plenty of exciting Liga MX action in that time as one of the largest and most atmospheric stadiums in Mexico.

And the backdrop at this ground is one of the most picturesque in world football, with supporters offered a stunning view of the 1820m peak of Cerro de la Silla. That view, alongside the fact that the gap between supporters and the playing area is as small as possibly allowed by FIFA, should make this one of the most atmospheric venues to play in

The national team play the majority of their games at the historical Estadio Azteca, but El Tri have played a handful of World Cup qualifiers and Nations League fixtures at the stadium, notably a 1-0 win over Costa Rica in March 2022, where Hirving Lozano’s late goal caused huge celebrations.

Prior to this tournament, the stadium was one of the key hosts of the CONCACAF Women’s Championship in 2022, although Mexico’s 0-3 defeat to Haiti will not be remembered fondly by the locals. In total, eight of that tournament’s games were played in Guadalupe, including the final, which Team USA won 1-0 versus Canada.
