Estadio Azteca: History

Estadio Azteca is the only stadium at the tournament to have hosted games at previous World Cups. The stadium held matches when Mexico hosted tournaments in 1970 and 1986. In fact, it’s hosted two World Cup finals. It’s also the oldest stadium at the World Cup, opened in 1966.

Estadio Azteca has been the home of Club America since the beginning, but has also hosted a number of other Mexican teams across the years. Now, the stadium is currently not in use as it is being renovated ahead of the World Cup. But it is one of the most iconic stadiums in the Americas.

The stadium has also been used to host the Olympics in 1968, the 1971 Women’s World Cup and the 2003 Concacaf Gold Cup.

Outside of football, the Estadio Azteca has been used to host NFL games, most recently in 2022. Michael Jackson, Shakira, Bad Bunny and U2 have all played concerts at the stadium.
