Trippier cites ‘unrest’ as reason for Tottenham departure

Kieran Trippier reveals ‘unrest’ behind the scenes at Spurs played a huge part in his move to Atletico Madrid this summer.

The England right-back joined the Spanish club in July and has revealed problems behind the scenes forced his departure.

Why did Tripper leave Tottenham? Five key things to know…

  • Trippier joined Spurs in 2015 for just £3.5 million from Burnley.
  • He made 69 Premier League appearances for the club across four seasons.
  • Trippier starred at the 2018 World Cup, creating more chances than any other player and scoring in the semi-final.
  • His form dipped last season and speculation linked him to a move away.
  • He joined Atletico this summer for £20m citing unrest at Spurs as one of the primary reasons.

The 28-year-old struggled to maintain his performance levels in 2018-19 and, despite making 27 Premier League appearances, he was dropped from Gareth Southgate’s last England squad.

Southgate cited competition for places as the reason, with Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold preferred to the Tottenham man.

He was sold to Atletico on 17 July and has now revealed why he wanted out.

“I think it was time for me to change and move on,” Trippier told Sky.

“I don’t necessarily mean that I needed to move on, but things happened behind the scenes at Tottenham, which I don’t really want to go into, but I needed to move on from that.”

Atletico off to a flyer

Tripper got off to a flyer for Atletico as they trounced rivals Real Madrid 7-3 in the International Champions Cup.

The defender impressed on debut and has been very pleased with the welcome he has received since joining.

“It’s been a lot easier than I expected,” Trippier said.

“The lads have been unbelievable with me. Since I’ve been through the door they’ve welcomed me with open arms, the coach as well.

“Especially those two – they’ve been brilliant with me, Morata and Costa. They’ve been explaining to me what it means to play for Atletico and what it means to the fans.”
