Sunderland vs Everton referee: Thomas Bramall’s history with both clubs

Sunderland and Everton go head to head in the Premier League on Monday night, with Thomas Bramall appointed as the referee.

The Sheffield official will be the man in the middle as matchweek nine draws to a conclusion at the Stadium of Light.

It will be Bramall’s 10th appointment of the season in all competitions, and sixth in the Premier League.

Last weekend, the 35-year-old was at the Emirates Stadium, where Arsenal beat Crystal Palace to tighten their grip on top spot.

Bramall is embarking on his fourth season as a Premier League referee, having made his top-flight bow when Fulham met Brighton in August 2022.

However, his third ended on something of a sour note, as he disallowed Morgan Rogers’ goal during Aston Villa’s 2-0 defeat at Manchester United. The result proved crucial with Unai Emery’s side missing out on Champions League qualification.

Thomas Bramall’s Sunderland record

This will be Bramall’s ninth match involving Sunderland, and second in the Premier League. The Sheffield also oversaw the Black Cats’ goalless draw with Crystal Palace on matchday four. History suggests his appointment will be a popular one in the eyes of Sunderland, who have not lost any of their eight games he has officiated after 90 minutes.

Thomas Bramall’s Everton record

This will be Bramall’s fifth match involving Everton, and first in the Premier League for nearly two years. His last top-flight appointment with the Toffees came in their goalless draw with Fulham in January 2024. The last two Toffees games he has officiated were in cup competitions, most recently their 2-0 win over Mansfield Town in this season’s EFL Cup.

What should we expect from Thomas Bramall?

Bramall has demonstrated this season that he is not afraid to take his cards out of his pockets. The Sheffield official has already issued 28 yellow cards and three red cards.

After dismissing Wolves defender Toti in their defeat at Bournemouth, his EFL Cup appointments have also seen him give early baths to Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitike and Chelsea’s Liam Delap in midweek.

Interestingly, though, he is yet to award a penalty this term, so we may well see a first this weekend.
