Sebastien Haller makes Champions League history as Ajax come from behind to beat Besiktas

Sebastian Haller made Champions League history as Ajax came from behind to beat Besiktas 1-2 in Istanbul.

Ajax fell behind early to a Besiktas penalty but they kept on plugging away. Haller had already scored in the first four games of this Champions League campaign and so it wasn’t a surprise when he showed up to slot home Nico Tagliafico’s unselfish cross.

That goal saw Haller draw level with Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski having scored in each of the first five games of this group stage, the only surprise was that it took the Ivory Coast international 54 minutes to score.

Well he didn’t have to wait too long for his second goal, when he deflected a Lisandro Martinez pass-shot into the back of the net to double his tally and, in the end, secure the victory for Ajax. Making them the first Dutch side to win their opening five group games.

Lisandro actually played a huge part in both goals, with his precision 40 yard pass bisecting the Besiktas midfield and defence to make the Dzeko goal possible. But the star of show was undoubtedly Haller, the big striker has now scored 19 goals in 19 games so far this season, which is impressive enough. Then you consider that 9 of those goals have come in 5 Champions League games.

And then you realise that those are Haller’s first five Champions League games. Meaning that Haller has now beaten Erling Haaland’s record of scoring at the start of your UCL career. He is now the first player in history to score 9+ goals in the first five games of his Champions League career. A truly remarkable achievement that sets Haller apart from his peers.
