Rodgers: Leicester have ‘thrown a grenade’ into the Premier League’s top-four race

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers believes his side have “thrown a hand grenade” into this season’s race for a top-four finish.

Arsenal were the latest side to be dispatched by the Foxes at the weekend, a result which has see them climb to second in the Premier League table.

Could Leicester finish in the top four? Five things to know…

  • Rogers joined Leicester in February 2019.
  • In his first full season at the helm, he has so far led the Foxes into the top two after 12 games.
  • Leicester have one more point after 12 games than they accumulated during their title-winning campaign.
  • They beat Arsenal 2-0 on Saturday to make it six league wins from seven.
  • Rodgers now believes his side have ‘thrown a grenade’ into the top-four race.

The Leicester boss still maintains that his move to the King Power was with a long-term project in mind, but he has not ruled out finishing in the European places this season.

“We are thinking about the development of the team and making them better and if we can bring European football here in my time, that would be great,” Rodgers told reporters.

“We have thrown a hand grenade right into the middle of it all. We are working very, very well. We will just concentrate on our performance levels until 10 games to go and assess it then.

“I came here to make an impact and create something that we can hopefully sustain over a number of years.”

The win over Arsenal means the Foxes have now won six of their last seven Premier League games, while they have also overtaken reigning champions Manchester City, who dropped to fourth.

The encouraging numbers behind Leicester’s 2019/20 campaign so far

Leicester fans can be encouraged by their start to the current campaign and a look at the numbers will bring them even more joy.

They have amassed an impressive 26 points so far, which is one more than they had after 12 games during the 2015/16 campaign in which they startled the world by winning the Premier League.

Jamie Vardy also became the first player to reach the 10-goal mark in the top-flight earlier this season. The last time he did so was also in their title-winning campaign, while he is also the top Premier League scorer in 2019, with 23 strikes.

The Foxes have also kept five clean-sheets already this season which is four more than they managed in the first 12 games of the 2015/16 campaign, while also scoring four more.
