West Ham United and Brentford meet in a Premier League derby on Monday night, with Andy Madley the man in the middle.
Madley has refereed just one Premier League game so far this season, overseeing Aston Villa’s 3-1 win over Fulham at the end of September. He showed five yellow cards in that game — four to Fulham — and awarded 23 fouls.
Madley has also had experience refereeing in Champions League qualifying, the Carabao Cup and League One this season. But some fans may be worried by his lack of time in the Premier League in 2025-26, after a few controversial moments last season.
This game will see Nuno Espirito Santo take charge of his first match at the London Stadium as West Ham manager. Both sides have struggled this season, sitting in the bottom quarter of the table.

West Ham fans may be getting sick of the side of Madley. He has only taken charge of 11 games involving West Ham, but the Hammers have lost seven of them. They did go unbeaten in their first four winning three including a match in the FA Cup. But West Ham have lost their last seven with Madley in the middle. Why are West Ham fans unhappy with Andy Madley?
As mentioned, West Ham’s winless run under Madley isn’t necessarily his fault. They’ve been games that West Ham wouldn’t have been expected to win. But the run did start in controversial fashion. West Ham lost 2-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in September 2022, a game they felt should have been a draw. Maxwel Cornet thought he had equalised late on following a defensive error from Chelsea. The goal was given on the pitch but, as always, went to VAR. They had deemed that Jarrod Bowen had fouled Edouard Mendy, calling Madley over to the monitor to review — which he did, overturning his original decision and disallowing the goal.

Andy Madley’s Brentford record
Madley has only refereed five teams more than he has Brentford. The official has been in the middle of 21 games involving the Bees — though only eight of those were in the Premier League. Madley’s first Brentford game came in 2014 when they beat Peterborough United away from home in League One, before officiating a number of Championship clashes.

Why will Brentford fans be happy to see Andy Madley?
Brentford don’t have a good record in games when Madley is refereeing. The Bees have lost 10 of their 21 matches, winning eight. But they have had a handful of penalties. Madley has awarded Brentford five penalties during his career, only giving more to Millwall (7). This includes two in his first Brentford game, with the Bees converting one and seeing the other saved. There was also a penalty for Brentford against Wolverhampton Wanderers last season, scored by Bryan Mbeumo. Madley has also given three penalties against Brentford, however.
What should we expect from Andy Madley?
