Newcastle United host Nottingham Forest in the Premier League this weekend, with Peter Bankes set to take charge of the match.
This will be Bankes’ sixth Premier League game of the season, with his last outing the incident-packed 2-1 win for Manchester United over Chelsea in September that saw Robert Sanchez and Casemiro both sent off.
It’ll also be the second time Bankes has refereed a game for both Newcastle and Forest this season, officiating the former’s 0-0 draw at Leeds and the latter’s 3-1 home win over Brentford.
Newcastle beat Union SG 4-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday and will now look to improve their domestic form, taking just six points from six Premier League games. Forest, meanwhile, are still seeking their first win under Ange Postecoglou.
Peter Bankes’ Newcastle United record
The 17 Newcastle games Bankes has refereed to date represents his fourth-highest total of any club so far. 14 of them have come in the Premier League, alongside two Championship games and an FA Cup fourth round tie against Oxford United in 2020. The Magpies’ games involving Bankes have been remarkably clean, with the referee only having to show one red card and 38 yellows. He’s awarded five penalties along the way, with two of them going in favour of Newcastle. The North East side don’t have the best record in Bankes’ games, however, winning just five of 17, including one of the last seven and two of the last 13.

What happened when Peter Bankes refereed Newcastle’s defeat to Brighton?
The most recent controversy involving Bankes and Newcastle came in their 1-0 defeat at home to Brighton early last season. Danny Welbeck scored the only goal of the game in the 35th minute, but the Magpies coaching staff felt they should have been given a penalty for handball by Joel Veltman, only to see both Bankes and the VAR wave appeals away.
“I haven’t seen it back. A couple of our coaches have and they’re adamant it was a penalty,” Eddie Howe said at the time. “If I look at it back and have the same view as the coaches, it will be a huge frustration because we were totally dominant at that point.

Peter Bankes’ Nottingham Forest record
Bankes has refereed more Nottingham Forest games across his career than any other team, taking charge of 25 games so far. The Tricky Trees have a strong record across those matches, with 13 wins and only eight defeats, with victories in each of their last six when penalty shootouts are included. Despite the regularity with which he’s officiated them, Bankes is yet to show a straight red card in a Nottingham Forest match, while he’s only awarded two penalties (one for, one against) and dished out 56 yellows — two of which were second yellows to convert into a sending off.

What happened the last time Peter Bankes refereed Nottingham Forest?
Nottingham Forest enjoyed a perfect start to the new Premier League season the last time Bankes took charge of them, beating Brentford 3-1 on the opening weekend. It was a pretty routine affair, with Forest 3-0 up by half-time, while the first and only yellow card wasn’t shown until the 90th minute when Brentford’s Aaron Hickey cynically brought down Callum Hudson-Odoi. There was one major incident, however, when Bankes correctly awarded a penalty to the Bees for a handball by Ibrahim Sangare, with Igor Thiago going on to dispatch the spot-kick for a consolation goal.
Nottingham Forest haven’t won a single game since then, with just two further points coming in the Premier League.
What should we expect from Peter Bankes?
Bankes tries to let games flow more than most referees, with only two officials averaging fewer fouls than his 20.09 per game so far this season. He’s also awarded the fewest fouls from tackles per game (0.55) and is at the lower end of the table for yellow (3.74) and red cards (0.13) per game. With that in mind, Newcastle and Forest should be able to get stuck into each other without too much fear of reprisal.
