Newcastle United and Arsenal have been involved in some hot-tempered affairs in recent years. And the duo will clash again at St James’ Park in the Premier League on Sunday.
Jarred Gillett has been entrusted with the refereeing responsibilities for this contest on Tyneside, in what will be the first time he has officiated this fixture. But it’s the second time he has been in the middle for an Arsenal clash this season.
Gillett was in charge for the Gunners’ 5-0 thrashing of Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium in August, where he awarded the hosts a penalty and booked two Leeds players.
St James’ Park hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for Arsenal of late. The Gunners have lost their last three trips to Newcastle without scoring.
Newcastle need the victory to keep building momentum and start climbing up the table. Whereas Liverpool’s perfect start to the campaign means Arsenal must put some pressure on the Reds and not allow them to get too far ahead.

There haven’t been any real incidents of note when it comes to Gillett officiating Newcastle matches, although he has been happy to dish out cards with an average of four per match.
Gillett last took charge of a Newcastle game in April 2025, being the man in the middle for their 4-1 win over Aston Villa.

Gillett has already been involved in three Arsenal matches this season, once as the referee in the victory over Leeds in Gameweek 2.
He was also the fourth official in the Gunners’ win over Manchester United on the opening weekend. And he was in the VAR booth for the draw against Manchester City last week.
Gillett was involved in a controversial moment back in December 2023 when he disallowed Arsenal’s late equaliser in the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa for a handball from Kai Havertz.
