Arsenal vs Newcastle referee: Samuel Barrott’s history with both clubs

Arsenal host Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday at 5:30pm, with Samuel Barrott appointed as referee.

Barrott is one of eight referees to have overseen at least 20 Premier League games this season, with this being his 21st match. Two of those games have involved Arsenal, including one game at the Emirates. Barrott has also taken charge of two Arsenal games in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

This will be Barrott’s third Newcastle game of the season, two of which have come in the Premier League.

Arsenal are looking to return to the top of the Premier League table, while Newcastle are hoping to climb the rankings.

Samuel Barrott’s Arsenal record

This will be Barrott’s 10th Arsenal game as a referee, and he’ll have only overseen one side more in his short career. Arsenal have won eight of the nine games with Barrott as referee, though they did suffer the one defeat in their most recent match. The games have been generally unevenful so far, with Arsenal only being shown nine yellow cards and receiving one penalty. On the flip side, Arsenal’s opponents have been shown 20 yellow cards, though no reds, and no penalties.

What happened when Samuel Barrott last refereed Arsenal?

Barrott was the man in the middle for Arsenal’s FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Southampton not too long ago. There wasn’t much action for him in the game, which is always what you want for a referee. He only showed three yellow cards, with two for Southampton. Arsenal’s sole yellow card was shown to Gabriel Martinelli for dissent in injury time.

Samuel Barrott’s Newcastle record

Barrott has overseen six Newcastle games in his career, and three of them have come this season. Newcastle have only won one of those three matches, though, having gone flawless in their first three games with Barrott in the middle. Barrott’s Newcastle games haven’t been filled with cards, with eight yellows for the Magpies and eight to their opponents. He has also awarded Newcastle a penalty, while sending off one of their opponents.

What happened when Samuel Barrott last refereed Newcastle?

Barrott refereed Newcastle’s 3-1 FA Cup defeat to Manchester City in March. He booked two Newcastle players, both for second-half fouls. But he didn’t really have too much to do in the game. And he certainly played no role in Newcastle’s defeat.

What should we expect from Samuel Barrott?

Despite refereeing 20 games so far Barrott has only sent one player off in the Premier League this season. It’s the fewest of any of the referees with 20+ matches. But Barrott is also one of seven referees to award at least six penalties. Barrott averages 3.7 cards per game, and 5.2 fouls per card, which sits him around the middle of the table for leniency this season.
