Raphael Guerreiro: Assist king wins Bundesliga award amid Dortmund contract uncertainty

Borussia Dortmund defender Raphael Guerreiro has been named the Bundesliga’s Player of the Month for March 2023.

Playing three league matches across the month, Die Schwarzgelben accumulated seven points from nine available, including an empathic 6-1 success over FC Cologne at the Westfalenstadion.

Guerreiro scored in that aforementioned win, as well as creating a further two goals, it came a week after he scored and assisted in their 2-2 draw with Revierderby rivals Schalke 04.

“We know he can make good decisions in midfield. He always moves into the half-spaces and knows what to do there,” Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic, who used the Portugal international left-back in central midfield, said afterwards.

That sensational form saw him finish ahead of Jeremie Frimpong (Bayer 04 Leverkusen), Erhan Masovic (VfL Bochum), Marius Bülter (FC Schalke 04), Exequiel Palacios (Bayer 04 Leverkusen), Omar Marmoush (VfL Wolfsburg). He’s the second Dortmund player after Julian Brandt — who claimed back-to-back accolades in January and February — to receive this monthly prize.

Guerreiro has since contributed with assists in Dortmund’s 4-2 loss at Bayern and their 2-1 win over Union Berlin subsequently leaving them in second place and two points behind their Bavarian adversaries as they chase a first league title since 2012 when Jurgen Klopp sat in BVB’s dugout.

His tally for this Bundesliga campaign now currently reads three goals and 11 assists in 21 appearances. Indeed, since 2023 began he’s created more goals than any other player in Europe’s top five divisions, with nine assists across nine matches played.

As things stand Guerreiro leads the race to be crowned Germany’s top division ‘assist king’. He’s one ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Randal Kolo Muani with seven matches remaining. These next fixtures, though, could be Guerreiro’s last in a BVB jersey. Guerreiro’s present deal expires in June 2023 and he’s already been linked with a Premier League move.

“It’s great to play at BVB, in this great stadium. I’m very happy with my career in Germany, the stadiums are always full! An extension? At the moment the club has not made any offer,” he recently told beIN Sports.

Guerreiro joined Dortmund from FC Lorient in July 2016 and has since gone on to make over 200 appearances for the club in all competitions. The powers that be in North Rhine-Westphalia, though, are reported to have offered the French-born Portuguese international a new contract despite agreeing to sign Ramy Bensebaini from Borussia Mönchengladbach on a free transfer in the summer.
