What is a corner?
According to Opta, the definition of a corner is as follows:
“When the ball has left the field of play for a corner. A Corner Won is collected for the team awarded the corner, and Corner Lost to the team conceding the corner. A Corner Taken is recorded when the attacking team have (or attempted to), return the ball back into play from a corner event.
“Due to the difference in collection criteria between Corner Won/Lost and Corner Taken, it is possible their respective aggregate totals could differ.”
What do corner numbers tell us about a player?
Precision and accuracy are two of the most important qualities required when taking a successful corner, with the need to pick out team-mates in a crowded penalty area.
Therefore, the responsibility is usually delegated by a team to their players with the best ball-striking technique. Traditionally, it falls to either central midfielders or wingers and, occasionally, forwards or full-backs.
The higher a player’s number means the greater he is trusted to deliver the goods, while it also demonstrates his team’s attacking quality in forcing their opponents into conceding them.
This season, James Ward-Prowse has taken 10 corners, six of which were successful, demonstrating his prowess as one of However, the more corners you take does not always mean you are successful.
Sometimes, accuracy is not always there, or their opponents’ defence is alert to the delivery and clear their lines. For example, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson has taken 15 corners – the most this term – but just three of them have been successful.
Who are the best corner takers in Premier League history?
Corner stats only go back to the 2006-07 season in the Premier League, when Opta’s records began.
Had it not been for that, you would expect the likes of David Beckham and Ryan Giggs to feature quite highly on that list.
However, as things stand, Ward-Prowse is way out in front on 1,365, over 300 clear of his closest rival Kevin De Bruyne, who has recently left the Premier League for Serie A. Ashley Young and Christian Eriksen are the other two players to reach four figures.
