Man City transfer news: Pep Guardiola expects Ilkay Gundogan to defy ‘all the great Twitter accounts’

Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola expects Ilkay Gündogan to remain at the club following this season.

The 31-year-old German international sees his present Etihad deal expire in June 2023 with reports on social media suggesting he could leave the defending English champions once their present campaign has concluded.

With one Premier League match remaining the former Borussia Dortmund man has been used sparingly this season. To date he’s made 26 league appearances and was an unused substitute in their 2-2 draw against West Ham last time out.

Following that showdown Gündogan was reportedly pictured heading to Madrid on a private plane but it was quickly shot down by his partner Sara Benamira who announced on her Instagram that the couple recently got married.

“We are married. We are really happy… we wanted to keep it private but unfortunately after this fake news about my husband I felt forced to say the truth,” it originally read before the post was updated. The new version reads: “We are married. We are really happy… can’t wait to celebrate with our families and friends. Gundos.”

Guardiola, meanwhile, feels Gündogan will remain at City unless he chooses not to be. Gundogan, who was Guardiola’s first signing as City manager for a reported £20m from Dortmund, has given the Spainard no indication that he wants to leave.

“He’s getting married, congrats for that. He had permission to go to Denmark, I congratulate him,” he said.

“I want him next season here, there’s no intention for him not to be here. Now he’s married he might want a new experience. All the great Twitter accounts say he’s going to leave but I didn’t know it. That’s the situation right now.”
