Bayern Munich forward Serge Gnabry believes Ousmane Dembele is a superior footballer to Kylian Mbappe.
The Germany international has rubbed shoulders with both French attackers on the pitch, and his experience tussling with them has left him in no doubt as to who the better player is.
Mbappe has largely been hailed as a future Ballon d’Or winner and is seen as one of the best players on the planet thanks to his medal-hoovering exploits since bursting onto the scene with Monaco, before elevating his status at PSG.
The 22-year-old Parisian is already a half-centurion at international level, a World Cup and Nations League winner with France, a three-time Ligue 1 Top Goalscorer, a French Player of the Year recipient (twice) and a collector of domestic medals aplenty with PSG.
Dembele by contrast has been beset by persistent injuries at Barcelona since trading Borussia Dortmund for the Camp Nou in 2017, with the 24-year-old yet to feature this season and still trying to justify his £97m price tag, which currently has him as the eighth-most expensive player ever.
Despite the contrasting fortunes, and Mbappe’s ascent to the pinnacle of sporting achievement, Gnabry has shunned his Parisian counterpart in favour of Barca’s convalescing winger, believing Dembele is “much better” when discussing their qualities alongside Thomas Muller and Joshua Kimmich on Amazon Prime Video.
“Dembele is much better than Mbappe,” Gnabry said.
Muller then replied: “What do you mean, better? If I could dribble like Dembele, I would be better too.”
Kimmich then chimed in with his own assessment, refusing to get drawn into the Mbappe debate, and instead suggesting Dembele is inferior to both Gnabry and another Bayern team-mate in the form of Kingsley Coman, with the former also present for the footballing discussion.
“If I am asked to choose between Dembele and Gnabry or Coman, I would always take Gnabry or Coman,” he said. “This Dembele discussion p*sses me off!”
