A top-four spot looks to be out of reach in the Premier League, but Newcastle’s recent revival has got them moving back in the right direction.

The Magpies have won three of their last four and the goals have started to flow for Eddie Howe’s men, who will be confident of extending their current streak this weekend.

Howe welcomes his former side Bournemouth to St. James’ Park, but the pleasantries won’t last long as his side look to take care of business.

Newcastle are warm favourites for victory at 17/20 and it is hard to see their visitors upsetting the odds at 16/5 on Saturday.

Eddie Howe receives the backing of a Newcastle legend

Newcastle have recovered some form now, winning four and drawing one of their last six matches across all competitions, with their only defeat coming 3-2 at home to Manchester City. But it was only a few weeks ago that the Magpies were in the midst of a run of just one victory in eight across all competitions, twice losing three in a row during that time.

It was form that saw Howe put under some heavy pressure, with pockets of supporters and commentators even beginning to question his role. Incredibly, Jose Mourinho was whispered among those who could possibly replace Howe in the dugout, but Newcastle legend and record goalscorer Alan Shearer has given the current boss his backing, despite being a big admirer of Mourinho.

“He has had an amazing career, Jose,” Shearer told The Rest Is Football Podcast. “Where he goes next I’m not sure. But, no, I am very happy with Eddie Howe at Newcastle and the job he has done and the role he is doing.”

Newcastle vs Bournemouth team news

Anthony Gordon should be okay to continue following a recent knock, but Newcastle still have a lengthy injury list.

Matt Targett, Elliot Anderson, Nick Pope, Alexander Isak, Joelinton and Joe Willock are ruled out, while there are doubts surrounding the fitness of Callum Wilson and Jacob Murphy.

Both will face late fitness tests this weekend, while Sandro Tonali remains absent as he serves a long-term suspension.

Bournemouth can boast a cleaner bill of health, with only Tyler Adams and Ryan Fredericks likely to miss out this weekend, although Max Aarons and James Hill are slight doubts.

Phillip Billing is suspended following his recent red card.
