Portugal vs Hungary: predictions, stats, tips & odds

Portugal and Ireland meet at Estádio José Alvalade in a key Group F game, as both nations battle for World Cup qualification.

The match, scheduled for a 19:45 kick off, will be the 11th meeting between the two nations and is one that could see Portugal secure qualification to the World Cup, next summer.

Best bets and predictions

Portugal enter this match as favourites, knowing that a victory would secure their passage through Group F. We’re confident in backing Roberto Martinez’s side to get the win but Hungary are a tricky prospect and we can certainly see them getting on the scoresheet.

Portugal Win & Both Teams To Score7/4 @ BOYLE Sports
(36.4%)
⭐⭐⭐⭐Portugal come into this game off the back of six wins in a row, including one against this Hungary side. Hungary have had an inconsistent period, winning two but losing two of their last five matches, although they have scored in each of their last four. The last meeting between these two nations ended 3-2 to Portugal, highlighting the attacking nature of both of these sides and we’re anticipating another high scoring affair between two nations desperate for World Cup qualification.
Both Teams to Score and Portugal to win by 2+ Goals and Cristiano Ronaldo to Score4/1 @ Bet365
(20%)
⭐⭐As mentioned above, we can definitely see both teams getting on the scoresheet, with recent meetings indicating that there could be plenty of goals in this encounter. With Portugal coming into the game with such good form (six wins in a row, 19 goals scored, seven conceded) we can see them taking charge of the match and winning by two clear goals. Ronaldo has been in great form, scoring 11 goals in his last 12 games for his country, and he’ll be on set pieces, increasing his chances of finding the net.

Portugal vs Hungary match odds

How both teams head into Portugal vs Hungary

As mentioned above, Portugal are in blistering form heading into this clash and have won all six of their last six fixtures. There have been impressive wins in that run too, with victories over Spain, Germany and, this week’s opponents, Hungary. Goals certainly haven’t been a problem for Roberto Martinez’s side, scoring 19 goals in those six games but they have conceded seven times, showing that they aren’t infallible. A victory in this game will all but seal their qualification to the World Cup, leaving them a minimum of six points ahead in Group F with just two games left to play.

The pressure is on for Hungary coming into this game. They have only won four points from a possible nine and sit in second in Group F. A playoff place looks like the most likely outcome for them but a win here would put them right back in the mix to top the group with two games left to play. Inconsistency has blighted Hungary in recent games, with wins over Azerbaijan and Armenia being cancelled out by loss against Sweden and Portugal, and they will need to be more consistent if they hope to be playing in the World Cup next summer.

Portugal team news

Portugal seemed to come through their match with Ireland without an injury concerns, despite Goncalo Ignacio leaving the pitch at half time. It could be the same team selection from Roberto Martinez but there are some calls for Francisco Trincao to start the game after impressing after coming on against the Irish.

Hungary team news

Roland Sallai and Barnabas Varga are both available again after serving suspensions against Armenia and both are likely to return to the starting line up. Liverpool duo, Milos Kerkez and Dominik Szoboszlai should continue to operate down the left hand side with West Brom’s Callum Styles retaining his place in the centre of midfield.

Head to head: Last 5 meetings

Portugal have won the last four meetings between the two sides, with the fifth ending in a draw. In that time, Portugal have scored 13 goals with Hungary finding the net five times.

Conclusion

Portugal, rightly, enter as favourites for this match and they certainly have the attacking talent to back up that claim. They’ve shown they are susceptible to conceding though, and with Hungary being no slouches, we’re backing Portugal to win and both teams to score as our top tip at 7/4 with BOYLE Sports for this clash.
