Bayern Munich and Chelsea get their Champions League campaigns underway with a match at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday 17th September at 8pm (UK time). A repeat of the 2012 Champions League final, Chelsea are back in the competition after four years away. Bayern have reached the quarter-finals in each of the past six seasons. This game will be broadcast live on TNT Sports 2.
Bayern Munich to win and BTTS (2/1 with bet365)
Bayern Munich have won all four of their games across all competitions this season. But they have only kept one clean sheet. The Bavarians have turned the Allianz Arena into a fortress in Europe, averaging nearly three goals per game at home in the competition last season. Chelsea, meanwhile, remain inconsistent as shown with their draw with Brentford last weekend. With Bayern’s frontline firing and Chelsea’s attack still capable of nicking a goal, this looks set up for a high-scoring home victory.
Harry Kane to be carded (11/2 with Paddy Power)
Harry Kane played in some memorable games against Chelsea when playing in the Premier League and he looks worth a punt at 11/2 to find his way into the referee’s notebook on Wednesday. Kane has been booked against Chelsea more than any other club in his career, picking up five yellows in total. A team he relishes playing against, and one that seems to add a bit of extra fire to his belly, back Kane to be carded in this Champions League clash.

How both teams go into Bayern Munich vs Chelsea
As mentioned, Bayern Munich have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League in each of the past six seasons. The first in that run saw Bayern go all the way to lift the trophy in 2019-20. And they beat Chelsea en route. Since then it has been four quarter-final exits and one semi-final run. Last season saw Bayern beaten by eventual runners-up Inter Milan in the quarter-finals, so they’ll be looking to do better this time around.
Chelsea have missed the past two seasons of the Champions League, and one of those campaigns also saw them sit out of Europe altogether. But they did taste success in the Uefa Conference League last season. When Chelsea were last in the Champions League they reached the quarter-finals, knocked out by Real Madrid. It was the second of two successive quarter-final exits to Real Madrid, after winning the trophy in 2020-21.
Bayern Munich team news
Jamal Musiala remains sidelined alongside defenders Hiroki Ito (leg) and Alphonso Davies (knee), while Vincent Kompany’s issues at left-back have deepened after Raphael Guerreiro sustained a rib injury shortly after coming on against Hamburg.
In attack, Nicolas Jackson is available to face his parent club but is expected to make way for Harry Kane, with Luis Díaz set to continue on the left after matching a Bayern record by scoring in each of his first three Bundesliga outings.
Chelsea team news
The visitors remain without Liam Delap (hamstring), Benoît Badiashile and Romeo Lavia (both unspecified), Dario Essugo (thigh) and the suspended Mykhailo Mudryk. Estevão Willian faces a late fitness check after illness, while Facundo Buonanotte has been omitted from Enzo Maresca’s league phase squad.
There were also worries over Joao Pedro, who requested to sit out at the weekend due to not being fully fit. Even so, the Brazilian has already produced five Premier League goal contributions in just four matches — a feat only bettered by Eden Hazard, who reached the tally quicker.
Bayern Munich vs Chelsea head-to-head
Bayern Have won three of their six meetings with Chelsea across all competitions, as well as one penalty-shootout victory. They beat the Blues 7-1 on aggregate when they last met in the Champions League in 2020.
