Manchester United vs Newcastle predicted XIs: Confirmed team news and probable line-ups
Manchester United and Newcastle United both find themselves competing for the European qualification places outside of the top four and the pair go head-to-head at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
It’s the last home game of the season for the Red Devils, who underwhelmed once again on Sunday as they went down 1-0 to title-chasers Arsenal at Old Trafford.
One defeat in their last eight Premier League games has seen Newcastle find some form at the business end of the season and the Magpies should fancy their chances of adding to United’s woes on Wednesday.
Sixth place on the line
Wednesday’s game sees eighth-place United look to go level on points with sixth-place Newcastle if they can secure a win over Eddie Howe’s side in Manchester. A shocking goal difference of -4 for United at this late stage of the season tells its own story for a squad that has had so much investment in it over the years.
Newcastle have had their ups and downs this term, with injuries certainly not helping the north-east outfit. A win would see the Magpies take a significant step towards that sixth-place finish and keep their noses ahead of a Chelsea side that are also finishing the campaign positively.

Manchester United vs Newcastle United team news
United boss Erik Ten Hag has had his own injury concerns over recent months, with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and long-term absentee Lisandro Martinez all missing the defeat to the Gunners at the weekend.
Having seen Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay recover from his recent injury to skipper United against Arsenal, the good news for the hosts is that Fernandes, Rashford and Martinez have all returned to full training.
The bad news is that Tyrell Malacia (knee), Victor Lindelof (thigh), Harry Maguire (muscle), Raphael Varane (muscle), Luke Shaw (thigh), Mason Mount (unspecified) and Anthony Martial (groin) all remain sidelined.
As for Newcastle, Howe has no fresh injury concerns after his side’s 1-1 draw with Brighton at St James’ Park over the weekend.
Striker Callum Wilson was a spectator for that game against the Seagulls due to a tight hamstring and it’s uncertain whether the England striker will be risked against the Red Devils this week.
Nick Pope was an unused substitute at the weekend, as the Three Lions keeper works his way back to full fitness after a lengthy layoff with a shoulder injury. It’s likely the former Burnley shot-stopper Pope might have to settle for a spot on the bench against United, while defender Fabian Schar could be sat alongside him, with the Swiss international just recovering from a recent thigh issue.
Matt Targett (Achilles), Lewis Miley (back), Joe Willock (calf), Jamaal Lascelles (knee) and Sven Botman (knee) are all long-term absentees for the visitors.
Predicted XIs:
Manchester United (4-2-3-1): Onana; Wan-Bissaka, Kambwala, Evans, Dalot; McTominay, Mainoo; Antony, Fernandes, Garnacho; Hojlund.
Newcastle United (4-3-3): Dubravka; Trippier, Krafth, Burn, Hall; Anderson, Guimaraes, Longstaff; Almiron, Isak, Gordon.
