Lee Gregory’s mask found after social media plea from Sheffield Wednesday following greatest playoff comeback

A public appeal for the return of Sheffield Wednesday striker Lee Gregory’s eye mask has been answered.

The 34-year-old had it misplaced following their historic League One Play-Off semi-final comeback over Peterborough.

As soon as it became clear of its disappearance the Owls would issue a plea on social media for its return. They needn’t wait long for the protective wear to show up as one fan informed the promotion-chasers that his father picked it up and he’d be glad to return it to Gregory before Monday.

Gregory has to wear the mask after sustaining a broken cheekbone during training earlier in the season. Because it’s custom built and with the League One play-off final scheduled for May 27th it couldn’t be replaced in time for the Wembley showpiece.

The Owls narrowly missed automatic promotion from English football’s third tier and finished 19 points above Peterborough in the regular season. Gregory came off the bench to play the final 30 minutes in their semi-final first-leg but was helpless as they suffered a 4-0 loss.

He would start the return game, scoring at both ends in a 5-1 success that led to Darren Moore’s side winning 5-3 on penalties, and in doing so the Owls pulled off the greatest comeback in Football League playoff history.

Sheffield Wednesday now faces Yorkshire rivals Barnsley for a place in next season’s Championship.
