Most La Liga clean sheets 2024-25: Early favourites, predictions and current standings
With so much focus now on goalkeepers being the first point of attack, it’s easy to forget the job they’re primarily there to do: keep the ball out of the net.
A number of the world’s best goalkeepers have plied their trade in La Liga over the years, from Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas to Andoni Zubizarreta, who is the Spanish top-flight’s appearance record holder with 622 outings across spells with Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona and Valencia.
That continues to be the case today. Just last season, Athletic Club’s Unai Simon topped the pile for clean sheets with 16, conceding just 33 goals in 3,184 minutes before going on to win Euro 2024 with Spain. Simon won the Ricardo Zamora trophy thanks to having the lowest goals-to-game ratio of any La Liga goalkeeper.
Up next were Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Real Sociedad’s Alex Remiro who both managed 15 clean sheets. Jan Oblak was joined by Georgia’s Euro 2024 hero Giorgi Mamardashvili on 13 clean sheets.
But, of course, goalkeeping isn’t just about clean sheets. While the best goalkeepers will rank pretty highly in that, aided by their defences, at the other end of the table, saves matter. A goalkeeper capable of making vital saves can be the difference between relegation and safety. Or, in some cases, it can make differences higher up the table.
Filip Jorgensen was top for saves last season with 143 but has since left for Chelsea, ahead of the likes of Paulo Gazzaniga, David Soria and Luis Maximiano.
Who will lead the way among La Liga goalkeepers in 2024-25?
La Liga 2024-25 most clean sheets predictions
With Thibaut Courtois returning to fitness for Real Madrid, the race to keep the most clean sheets in Spain has been blown wide open. The Belgian will, of course, face fierce competition from the likes of Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Unai Simon, while Jan Oblak remains among the world’s very best goalkeepers and will always bring in a lot of clean sheets thanks to Atletico Madrid’s defensive solidity.
Beyond the obvious favourites, Alex Remiro and Stole Dimitrievski enjoyed strong 2023/24 campaigns with Real Sociedad and Rayo Vallecano, respectively, with the latter now at Valencia. He is serving as back-up to Giorgi Mamardashvili, who is now on loan at Los Che following his transfer to Liverpool.
