Jurgen Klopp explains identity mantra driving Liverpool’s title bid

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed his motto for the season which fans will hope can lead the club to Premier League glory.

The Reds maintained their perfect start to the new Premier League campaign thanks to a 3-1 win over Arsenal at Anfield on Saturday, as they remain the only club with a 100 per cent record this season.

What is Liverpool’s identity? Five things to know…

  • Liverpool missed out on the Premier League title by just one point last season.
  • The Reds have started the new campaign with three wins from three.
  • Their most recent victory saw Liverpool overpower Arsenal with a 3-1 win.
  • It keeps them top of the Premier League table and two points clear of Manchester City.
  • Jurgen Klopp has revealed that “intensity” is Liverpool’s identity this season.

Last season the Reds missed out on the title by just one point, finishing on 97 to Manchester City’s 98 – recording the highest tally ever by a team not to win the league.

Klopp’s side also lost just one league game all season, a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City in January which proved to be vital in the title race.

But Liverpool’s perfect start has Klopp’s men looking like serious contenders once again, and the German has revealed his mantra for the season ahead.

“Our identity is intensity,” he told reporters.

Liverpool used their “intensity” to break down Arsenal on Saturday, tiring their opponents in the first half before taking control after half-time. And Klopp disclosed what he said to his players at the break.

“I said to the boys: ‘OK, but how do you think they feel?’ Because it was an intense first half, but Arsenal had to make all the runs as well.

“Sure, we did them, but that means so did they. And the tempo we put in the game from the beginning was really incredible. There was no time to breathe.

“Adrian catches the ball, throws it out, now go. Andrew Robertson gets the ball. Oh really, again? We did it constantly. And I like that.”

Liverpool’s next test as they look to maintain their perfect start comes in the form of Burnley, who welcome the Reds to Turf Moor on Saturday evening.

Klopp: Liverpool are not Disneyland

After dominating the game with their attacking play, Liverpool did allow Arsenal some late chances, with Lucas Torreira scoring a consolation goal in the 85th minute.

But while some managers might focus on the momentary lapses of concentration in spite of a win, Klopp was happy with his team’s performance.

“For 80 minutes we were completely in charge of the game,” he added.

“We are not Disneyland, we do not need to excite everyone in every second.

“It was a brilliant game from my side so early in the season. It was outstanding.

“It was a performance full of power, energy, greed and passion, which I think you need to have against a team like Arsenal.

“We are still really early in the season and throwing such energy on the pitch is exceptional. The work rate of the whole team was exceptional.

“Tactical discipline was exceptional apart from maybe 10-15 minutes.”
