Jorginho hits out at the Premier League’s “insane” substitution rule

Jorginho has joined a growing list of managers and players urging the Premier League to reintroduce the five-substitution rule.

At the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 the Premier League extended the number of substitutes a team were allowed to make from three to five.

Top-flight officials reverted back to three substitutions per club last season, but given the congested festive schedule and rising cases among players, there are now growing calls for five substitutions to be reinstated.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel recently threw his weight behind the idea, saying: “I would love to push for five substitutions because five substitutions were made to protect the players when coronavirus popped up and made life difficult.

“I think the situation is very serious and very challenging so if we decided to keep on playing at least we should have five changes to control the load.”

Blues midfielder Jorginho has now echoed his manager’s sentiment, describing the decision not to reintroduce the five-substitution rule as “insane”.

“It’s very hard, because we don’t have time to rest. We need to play every three days and we have just three subs and that’s insane we don’t go for five,” Jorginho told beIN Sports.

“In my opinion it’s just too much. We should do something about it, because if we keep going like this, we’ll just have more players injured and maybe the quality of the game will go down, so that’s not the best for entertainment.”

Following further dropped points to Brighton in the Premier League on Wednesday, with Danny Welbeck netting in the 91st minute to snatch a draw from the jaws of defeat for the Seagulls, Tuchel significantly downplayed Chelsea’s chances of competing for the title this season.

In the aftermath of that 1-1 draw, Tuchel commented “How should we be in it [the title race]? We have seven Covid cases. We have five or six players out for six or more weeks. How should we compete in a title race?”

Further dropped points, coupled with Man City’s win over Brentford shortly after on Thursday night, now means Chelsea are eight points behind Pep Guardiola’s table-toppers after 20 games. The Blues next three league games also include Liverpool, Tottenham and City.
