‘Goal of the season’: Saunders delivers bizarre assessment of Aubameyang goal vs Watford

Dean Saunders believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s goal against Watford on Monday is the ‘goal of the season’.

In the same round of fixtures, Mohamed Salah delivered a piledriver to help Liverpool inflict a 2-0 defeat on Chelsea to return to the top of the Premier League.

Saunders’ Aubameyang claim: Four key things to know…

  1. Aubameyang dispossesed Ben Foster to score the winning goal for Arsenal against Watford.
  2. TalkSPORT’s Dean Saunders believes this strike is the ‘goal of the season’.
  3. In the same round of fixtures, Salah scored from 25-yards to help Liverpool beat Chelsea 2-0.
  4. Many fans believe that strike, or Andros Townsend’s against Man City in December, should be goal of the season.

Aubameyang’s goal, meanwhile, was an opportunistic strike after he chased down a heavy touch from Watford stopper Ben Foster near his own goal-line.

And Saunders believes Aubameyang’s ‘determination’ in ‘chasing a lost cause’ is the reason why the ex-Dortmund man’s strike should be held in higher regard than Salah’s.

“For me, this is going to sound stupid, goal of the season for me,” he said on talkSPORT.

“You look at Salah’s goal and you think ‘how could that be better?’

“Aubameyang has chased a lost cause which is a goal that he’s got out of nothing.

“Personally for me, as a striker and coaching strikers I enjoyed that more than Salah’s goal.

“He turned a back pass, with his effort and determination, and he’s won them the game.”

Aubameyang’s goal sealed a 1-0 win for Arsenal over the Hornets, lifting them back above Man Utd and Chelsea into fourth place.

Fans react to Saunders’ ‘nonsense’ Aubameyang claim

Granted, Aubameyang’s commitment to chase down a back-pass was both impressive and vital in getting Unai Emery’s side the win.

However, to claim his goal should stand above Salah’s or Andros Townsend’s volley against Manchester City earlier this season is ambitious at best.

As always, fans were quick to let Saunders know what they felt on Twitter.
