Whatever momentum Chelsea gained from their win over Brighton on Premier League matchday 14 has since dissipated.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men came into this afternoon’s showdown at Goodison Park reeling from a 2-1 loss against Manchester United on the road. Everton, who the league recently docked 10 points for a breach of their profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) for the season-ending 2021/22, were buoyant following their 3-0 win over Newcastle United

That success came on the back of a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest meaning they’ve now strung together a three-game winning run after Abdoulaye Doucouré and Lewis Dobbin settled today’s contest. Even more pleasing for head coach Sean Dyche is three consecutive shutouts (a run of 334 minutes without conceding a goal) and the first at home since a 3-0 success over Bournemouth in early October.

Their last such lengthy run of games without conceding a goal in the competition was a run of four games from 7th February 2009 to 4th March 2009. Doucouré’s effort is notable as since Dyche’s first game as Everton manager in February, the Malian has more non-penalty goals in the Premier League than any other midfielder (11).

It was also the 23rd time that Chelsea conceded the opening goal in the Premier League in 2023, their joint-most in a calendar year in the competition (also 23 in 1993).

For the Londoners a third straight away day loss. Indeed, they’ve only tasted five successes on the road in 2023, with only Wolves (3) and Nottingham Forest (2) poorer travellers in England’s top division this year. Furthermore, it’s now 19 losses during this aforementioned period, the joint worst by a Premier League side albeit seven of those coming under Pochettino’s leadership.

Everton meanwhile finish this weekend in 17th place, but without their points deduction they’re sitting pretty in 10th, four points (and two places) above Chelsea while not far away from the European places.
