Portugal Euro 2024 Fixtures: Dates, Venues and Game Analysis

Portugal came into Euro 2024 as one of the sides some are tipping to go all the way but they were unable to make it past the quarter-final stage following a 5-3 penalty shootout loss to France.
Group F seemed to present some intriguing challenges to Portugal, but after they came from behind to rescue a win against Czech Republic before trouncing Turkey 3-0, the Selecao secured top spot in the group with a game to spare. That made their 2-0 defeat to Georgia on Matchday Three all the more surprising, even if boss Roberto Martinez heavily rotated his squad for that game.
In the Round of 16, penalties were required to overcome Slovenia in Frankfurt with Jan Oblak saving a Cristiano Ronaldo spot-kick in extra-time.

Portugal needed a late turnaround and more than a little luck to earn three points against Czech Republic in their opening game. A Robin Hranac own goal cancelled out Lukas Provod’s opener before an injury-time winner from Francisco Conceicao spared Portugal’s blushes and earned them a 2-1 win.

After surviving a scare against the Czech Republic, there were no such issues for Portugal on Matchday Two as they cruised to a 3-0 win over Turkey in Dortmund. Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes were on the scoresheet as the Selecao put in the kind of dominant display that many fans were expecting from them pre-tournament.

Although Roberto Martinez heavily rotated his side for the final group stage game with top spot in Group F already secured, to lose 2-0 to a Georgia side playing in their first ever major tournament was definitely a shock for the Selecao and gives the manager food for thought going into the Round of 16.

Although clearly the favourites to win their Round of 16 tie, Portugal eventually needed penalties to overcome Slovenia in Frankfurt after Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty in extra-time. Benjamin Sesko missed a great chance to earn Matjaz Kek’s side a famous win but once we reached the shoot-out, Slovenian hearts were broken as they saw all three of their attempts saved by Porto keeper Diogo Costa.
