England team news vs Andorra
Thomas Tuchel likely to rotate his Three Lions squad at Villa Park.
While it boasts the experience of Harry Kane, Jordan Pickford, Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson — and the returning John Stones — there is certainly an experimental feel about Tuchel’s squad.
It is not surprising really with the World Cup now under a year away. Tuchel is eager to assess all options available to him before naming that final party.
Part of it is forced with injuries to the likes of Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer and Bukayo Saka. However, there is also no place for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker, Harry Maguire, Phil Foden or Jack Grealish.
Marcus Rashford and Jarrod Bowen have been recalled, as has AC Milan midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek — almost seven years after his last international call-up.
Loftus-Cheek’s return came after the withdrawal of Adam Wharton. There could also be debuts for Tottenham full-back Djed Spence and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson.
With the greatest respect to Andorra, Tuchel is unlikely to name his strongest starting XI available for this clash. He will definitely be more focused on Tuesday’s trip to Serbia.
Questions to be answered in midfield
It appears to be an area Tuchel is still not completely convinced by. Indeed, he has called up 13 different midfielders in just three squads since taking charge.
England were certainly overrun in that area of the field during the disappointing 3-1 defeat to Senegal at the City Ground last time out.
The absences of Bellingham, Palmer and Saka remove three players likely to be in strong contention to start at the World Cup, while Declan Rice is probably a nailed-on choice in the heart of midfield or as a No.8.
Tuchel has recalled Henderson since taking charge, though while he provides superb leadership qualities and that calming presence in the middle of the park, he will be 36 by the time the tournament rolls around.
Nevertheless, it is a decent opportunity for him to demonstrate what he can still bring to the table for the Three Lions, while this is also a chance for players like Rashford, Bowen, Anthony Gordon and Eberechi Eze to show what they can do.
One way or another, Tuchel will hope to have some answers come the conclusion of this international break.
