Hungary rounded off their successful Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with a 3-1 win over Montenegro at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest this evening.

Marco Rossi’s men had already secured passage into next summer’s tournament but still had some work left if they wanted to finish in first place.

However, things weren’t looking good at half-time with the hosts trailing, Slobodan Rubežić had put Miodrag Radulović’s visitors in front. The game turned on its head within an insane two-minute spell that saw Liverpool midfielder Szoboszlai net twice.

His first effort was an incredible solo effort that saw him collect the ball out near the right wing before going on a mazy run into the area, somehow going through three defenders before dropping his shoulder and striking a low finish from a tight angle.

Soon after Szoboszlai exchanged passes with Martin Ádám before planting a side-footed finish that clipped off goalkeeper Filip Đukić and spun high into the net. “Szoboszlai…. Dominik!” rang around the stadium. Adam Nagy would finish the scoring deep into stoppage time when he was first to a rebounded Szoboszlai free-kick.

Szoboszlai was undoubtedly the player of the match. He was at the heart of the fightback which saw Hungary finish as worthy table-toppers but the Magyars skipper was first to point out today’s success was nothing more than a team effort.

“I didn’t turn the game around alone. I scored two goals, but I needed the others as well. We reacted well in the second half. We came out, showed our personality, and everybody did their job,” he told UEFA.com.

When asked his thoughts on topping Euro 2024 qualifying Group G he added: “We are really happy to finish first, and remain unbeaten, and that next summer we will go to Germany. I don’t have any hopes or expectations. We’re going to go there and do our job; we are ready.”
