Dejan Lovren ‘angered’ by Liverpool comeback doubters

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has admitted that he is “angered” by people who doubt their ability to overturn their Champions League fortunes.

The Reds face Barcelona on Tuesday evening in the Champions League semi-finals, having lost last week’s first leg 3-0.

Can Liverpool do it? Five things you need to know…

  1. Liverpool lost 3-0 against Barcelona thanks to a Lionel Messi double and a Luis Suarez strike.
  2. The Reds would need at least four goals without reply to avoid extra-time.
  3. Jurgen Klopp has revealed that they will be without top-striking duo Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino due to injury.
  4. The Premier League side are still in the hunt for the Premier League title with just one game left to play.
  5. Barcelona have already won La Liga and are still in a position to add both the Champions League and Copa del Rey to their collection this season.

Croatia defender Lovren has dismissed suggestions that Liverpool will not be able to overturn a three-goal deficit and is determined to secure a second successive final appearance.

Speaking to reporters, the World Cup finalist said the doubt fuels his “anger” and makes him more “hungry” to succeed at Anfield and ensure his side are in the final in Madrid.

He said: “It makes me more angry. Angry and hungry to show them we are capable of doing something special at Anfield.

“We have big players and big players should show in big games and I think this is one of those games on Tuesday so I expect one of the biggest games at Anfield.

“This is why we are Liverpool. This is why we are a unique club. When people say to us ‘They are already done. They will not come through’, we always show the balls to produce the biggest comebacks.

“It doesn’t look like it from the result at the moment, because they are 3-0 up, but football is unpredictable – especially in the Champions League at Anfield.”

All or nothing

The next week is arguably the most important week since Klopp took the reins at Liverpool in 2015.

Having negotiated their way past a resilient Newcastle United side – beating the Geordies 3-2 in the last moments of the match – Liverpool put themselves back on top of the Premier League with a game left to play.

Manchester City face Leicester City on Monday night knowing that a win is crucial to their hopes of retaining the title.

If City fail to pick up maximum points and Liverpool somehow turn their Champions League fortunes around this week, then Klopp’s side will be in pole position to create history and win a historic double.

However, a City win versus the Foxes and failure to progress past Barcelona may see Liverpool – despite their excellence this season – finish without a trophy to their name.
