Chelsea vs Western Sydney Wanderers: predictions, best bets and latest odds

Chelsea vs Western Sydney Wanderers predictions mark Xabi Alonso’s first match in the Blues dugout. The pre-season friendly kicks off at 10.45am (UK time) on Tuesday 28th July at Accor Stadium in Sydney.

This is the opening fixture of the Sydney Super Cup. Chelsea begin a five-match tour of Australia and Asia off the back of a troubled 2025/26 campaign. Meanwhile, the Wanderers start life under new manager Ufuk Talay after finishing bottom of the A-League with just five wins from 26 games.

OUR PREDICTIONODDS & BOOKMAKERWHY WE’RE BACKING IT
Joao Pedro to score anytime4/5 with Sky Bet (55.6%)Chelsea’s top scorer last season netted 15 Premier League goals from 2,674 minutes. That works out at a strike every 178 minutes. Brazil overlooked the forward for the World Cup, handing him a full pre-season to sharpen up. He leads the line against the weakest defence in last season’s A-League. The Wanderers conceded 43 goals in 26 games, shipping 1.65 per match. They let in three or more on five separate occasions. A striker of this calibre against this opposition should find the net at the Accor Stadium.
Chelsea to win to nil11/8 with Sky Bet (42.1%)The gulf in quality between these two sides is vast. Chelsea finished in the Premier League’s top half. The Wanderers finished bottom of the A-League, scoring just 27 goals across an entire campaign. Even with heavy rotation, Alonso has Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana and summer signing Marco Palestra at his disposal. Western Sydney’s leading scorer Bozhidar Kraev managed five A-League goals all season. Chelsea kept nine clean sheets in 38 Premier League matches last term. The Wanderers’ blunt attack faces a huge step up against defenders tested weekly in England’s top flight.

How both teams head into Chelsea vs Western Sydney Wanderers

Chelsea

The Blues’ 2025/26 campaign ended in turbulence. Three managers sat in the Stamford Bridge dugout across a chaotic season. Chelsea won just three of their final 14 games. A 1-0 FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City capped a miserable run. The club then ended the campaign without European qualification.

In the Premier League, the Blues scored 58 and conceded 52 across 38 games. Joao Pedro topped the scoring charts with 15 goals. Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer contributed 10 each. Nine clean sheets from 38 outings highlighted significant defensive weakness.

Alonso arrives from a decorated spell at Bayer Leverkusen, where he delivered an invincible Bundesliga title. A brief period at Real Madrid followed. The Spaniard has flagged physicality as a priority. Chelsea were outrun in all but one Premier League match last season.

This tour is his first chance to put ideas into practice. The squad has been reshaped over the summer. Marc Cucurella left for Real Madrid. Alejandro Garnacho joined Aston Villa on loan. Morgan Rogers arrived from Villa for a club-record £117 million fee. Geovany Quenda signed from Sporting CP for £40m and Palestra arrived for £47m.

Western Sydney Wanderers

The 2025-26 season was one to forget for the Wanderers. Five wins, six draws and 15 defeats left them bottom of the A-League. It was the first time in club history they finished last. A goal difference of minus 16 told its own story at CommBank Stadium. Manager Alen Stajcic was sacked in January. Gary van Egmond took temporary charge but could not reverse the slide. ESPN handed the Wanderers an F in their end-of-season report card, describing the campaign as “an abject failure”. Crowds dropped by 22% as patience wore thin across the fanbase.

However, change has arrived quickly. Talay left rivals Sydney FC to take charge ahead of the 2026/27 season. A major squad cleanout is underway. The Wanderers opened their competitive calendar last week with a 2-0 Australia Cup win over Tigers FC. Brandon Borrello and Miguel Di Pizio grabbed the goals, providing a small morale boost ahead of this clash with the Blues.

Chelsea team news

Several first-team regulars are absent from the touring party. Reece James, Fernandez, Pedro Neto and Trevoh Chalobah have yet to link up following World Cup duties. Rogers has not reported. Emmanuel Emegha and Quenda stayed behind in London nursing knocks.

Palmer missed Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup and has had a full pre-season as a result. Pedro was likewise overlooked by Brazil. Both should feature prominently. Romeo Lavia is reportedly nursing a minor knock but is expected to be available. Colwill requires match minutes after an ACL injury disrupted most of his 2025/26 campaign.

Palestra could make his debut at right-back or wing-back. The 27-man touring party includes a number of academy graduates. Tayo Subuloye, Landon Emenalo, Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli and Reggie Walsh have all been given the chance to impress the new manager.

Western Sydney Wanderers team news

Talay is expected to name a strong side for this glamour fixture. Borrello, Di Pizio and Liam Gillion should lead the attack. Midfielders Dylan Scicluna and Angus Thurgate are set to feature centrally. German Ferreyra and Anthony Pantazopoulos should anchor the defence. Wholesale changes at half-time are anticipated.

Head-to-head

These two clubs have never met. Chelsea have previous experience on Australian soil, beating Sydney FC 1-0 during a past pre-season tour. The Wanderers have faced English opposition twice in the past decade. They lost 3-1 to Arsenal in a 2017 friendly and went down 2-1 to Leeds United in 2019. History sits firmly on the side of the Premier League visitors.

Which side will come out on top at the Accor Stadium?

Chelsea are strong favourites at a best price of 1/4. The Wanderers are available at 11/2, with the draw priced at 6/1.

For Alonso’s first public match in charge, a comfortable Blues win looks the most likely outcome. The Spaniard will prioritise fitness and integration ahead of the scoreline. Rotation across the 90 minutes is guaranteed. Even so, a front line featuring Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens carries more than enough firepower against A-League opposition.

The Wanderers enter a new era under Talay, but their squad faces a daunting step up in quality. Pedro to score anytime is the standout bet. Chelsea’s top scorer starts against the A-League’s leakiest defence with a full pre-season behind him.

A clean sheet for the Blues rounds off the pair. The quality gap between these two squads is simply too wide for Western Sydney’s misfiring attack to bridge.
