Sporting Club have finally agreed a fee with Atletico Madrid for former winger Gelson Martins, nearly a year after the 24-year-old left the club on a ‘free’.

A €22.5m deal has been struck between both parties after 10 months of legal disputes regarding the fee, but Atleti will reportedly sell the Portugal international to AS Monaco – where he has spent half the season on loan – immediately, for a transfer ranging between €30-35m.

Martins set for Monaco? Five things you need to know…

  1. Following a violent clash with Sporting supporters at the club’s training ground last summer, several players terminated their contracts, including Martins.
  2. As a result, the winger transferred to Atletico on a ‘free transfer’ in July 2018 and has since made just 12 appearances.
  3. Since his move, the two clubs have argued over the legalities of the 2018 transfer but the €22.5m deal will bring an end to the matter.
  4. Martins – who made 140 appearances for Sporting Club – will then reportedly make his loan move to AS Monaco permanent.
  5. The 24-year-old has enjoyed more success in Ligue 1 this season, making 15 appearances and scoring four goals.

Everyone’s a winner?

The complications of Martins’ transfer to Atletico seem to be over, with Sporting confirming that they have finally agreed upon a fee which leaves both parties happy.

Sporting can now concentrate on the continued development of their own fortunes on the football pitch rather than concentrating on any outstanding legal issues with the Spanish outfit.

In contrast, Atletico can now rid themselves of the whole transfer saga and potentially make a profit on a player who only made 12 appearances for Los Rojiblancos in the 2018/19 campaign.

Martins himself could finally close the chapter on a torrid affair that has seen him struggle for consistency in Spain this season, culminating in a decent loan spell in Ligue 1 that may well become permanent.

The Portuguese club have also confirmed an agreement with the Spanish club for striker Luciano Vietto for €7.5m, with the 25-year-old having just finished a season-long loan with Premier League side Fulham.

The agreement between the two clubs states that Atleti have included a clause which entitles them to 50% of any future transfer fee Sporting receive for Vietto.
