Arsenal team news vs Leeds
Mikel Arteta could be without two of his starting defenders, as both William Saliba and Jurrien Timber are currently being assessed ahead of Leeds at the weekend.
This could see Ben White continue in a more attacking right-back role, with one of Piero Hincapie or Cristhian Mosquera joining Gabriel in central defence.
Max Dowman is also still missing, so won’t be with the squad to face Leeds, but this should not be an issue for Arteta who has plenty of attack-minded players returning to the squad.
Kai Havertz made his first start of the season, playing the opening 45 minutes against Kairat Almaty in the UEFA Champions League, and therefore could play a part against Leeds at the weekend as he builds fitness.
Arteta’s attacking intent
Arsenal lost their first game in the Premier League since their 2-1 loss against Aston Villa back in December, going on a streak that saw the Gunners earn themselves a seven point lead at the top of the league prior to last weekend.
But their loss to Manchester United saw the gap reduced to just four points, with Manchester City and Aston Villa trailing.
Arteta has since came out to the fans and urged them to “jump in this boat because it’s going to be fun”, as the Spaniard looks to rally the troops for a crucial few months ahead.
The anxious feeling around the fanbase feels louder after the Manchester United loss, having finished runners-up for the past three seasons in the Premier League.
Arsenal have scored 42 goals this season, with 13 coming from set-pieces and a large portion of their xG coming from set-pieces, with 12.18 xG generated (the highest in the division from set-pieces).
However, the Gunners have recently been labelled “risk averse” and accused of “playing with the handbrake up”, generating less from open play than some of their rivals.
With this in mind and Arteta’s comments about the “fun” to come, it will be interesting to see just how aggressive and front-footed the Gunners are against Leeds at the weekend, as they look to make a statement and get straight back on the horse.
