Arsenal team news vs Bayern Munich

Arsenal continue to be hit pretty hard by injuries and Mikel Arteta is needing to make full use of his deep squad as a result.

Kai Havertz has suffered a setback during his recovery from a knee injury and the forward will not make the roster to face Bayern Munich.

Gabriel Jesus also remains sidelined by a long-term knee issue, while fellow striker Viktor Gyokeres has missed the Gunners’ last three matches and, if he is not available to return for this one, then Mikel Merino should once again deputise up front.

Centre-back Gabriel is undergoing scans on a muscle injury suffered on international duty with Brazil and the defender is likely to be replaced by on-loan Bayer Leverkusen man Piero Hincapie.

There is some good news for the Gunners, with attackers Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli back from injury. The wide forwards started on the bench in Arsenal’s 4-1 north London derby victory over Tottenham on Sunday and could come into the starting line up.

Captain Martin Odegaard is nearing a return to fitness and may be named amongst the substitutes on Wednesday night.

Ben White and Myles Lewis-Skelly are pushing for recalls in defence, and with Arsenal facing a key Premier League contest against Chelsea on Sunday, Arteta may look to freshen up his side.

Gunners with one eye on domestic duties

Arsenal have the chance to make it five Champions League victories on the bounce by beating Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, but their focus may be more firmly set on domestic matters.

The Gunners have picked up maximum returns in games against Athletic Bilbao, Olympiakos, Atletico Madrid and Slavia Prague, and with a home contest against Kairat to come, qualification to the knockout rounds of the competition is pretty much assured for the north Londoners.

Domestically, Mikel Arteta’s side moved six points clear at the top of the Premier League table following their 4-1 north London derby rout against Tottenham on Sunday and a long-awaited league title is the top priority for the Gunners this season.

Chelsea have become Arsenal’s nearest rivals at the top of the Premier League, and with a Stamford Bridge tie against the Blues upcoming on Sunday, Arteta is likely to have one eye on domestic duties.

That said, Arsenal have won eight of their nine home matches this season and even Bayern Munich will face a tough test regardless of the side Arteta selects.
