AC Milan should sign Divock Origi from Liverpool, says Rossoneri legend

AC Milan legend Demetrio Albertini believes his former club should move for Liverpool cult hero Divock Origi.

The 26-year-old Belgian has been in and out of Liverpool’s first team since completing a move from Lille in 2014, scoring some crucial goals in that time.

He famously netted a brace against Barcelona in Liverpool’s dramatic Champions League semi-final comeback, with Jurgen Klopp’s men progressing to the 2019 final after trailing by three goals in the first leg.

He went on to score in the final against Tottenham as well, securing Liverpool a 2-0 win and their sixth European crown. He’s chipped in with some vital goals before and after that fairytale Champions League run, including a scorpion kick earlier this season in the League Cup.

Despite that, Origi has largely remained on the fringes at Anfield, owing to the attacking quality ahead of him in the pecking order, not least Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota.

Given the scarcity of first-team opportunities for Origi, Milan legend Albertini believes his former club should offer him an escape hatch, suggesting a player of his quality could catapult Stefano Pioli’s men to Serie A title glory.

“Milan need to look at strikers who are kept on the bench or even in the stands and don’t get much space at their current clubs, such as Origi at Liverpool,” Albertini told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“He would score lots of goals in Serie A. You win a Scudetto thanks to hitmen, and that is a midfielder saying that.”

Milan already have a fairly bloated frontline, with Olivier Giroud, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ante Rebic, Pietro Pellegri and Rafael Leao offering Pioli a range of attacking choices, but each player has suffered this season with respective injury issues — the latter four all missed the most recent contest against Empoli.

As things stand, the Rossoneri are currently second in the Serie A table, behind only rivals and current Italian champions Inter, who are leading the way with a four-point cushion under summer appointment Simone Inzaghi.
