The Champions League is back, and after the completion of the last season, attention turns to the unique mini-tournament held exclusively in Portugal.
Europe’s flagship competition was forced to halt live action in March, but returns with a 12-day football feast in August, akin to a World Cup or European Championship knockout stage.
The last-16 saw some big games exit the competition including Real Madrid, Juventus and Chelsea, with RB Leipzig and Atalanta perhaps the most surprising names in the quarter-finals.
Defending champions Liverpool will not be present in the final eight having been put to the sword by a frustrating Diego Simeone-inspired Atletico Madrid at Anfield just before football’s break.
The six-time holders had chances aplenty but came unstuck at the opposite end of the pitch, with deputy ‘keeper Adrian having a night to forget.
The stand-in Spaniard produced a howler to allow Marcos Llorente to bring Atleti back into the contest, while Jan Oblak had a storming game, highlighting just how important a solid goalkeeper really is.
