Qatar took full advantage of Switzerland’s lax finishing to earn a point against all the odds thanks to a last minute Boualem Khoukhi header in this World Cup Group B clash.

Switzerland had taken the lead in the first-half thanks to a Breel Embolo penalty. Mahmoud Abunada felled Remo Freuler amid calls for offside, but the spot-kick was given. However, despite racking up 3.63 xG, el Nati were unable to find a second goal.

And eventually, the Maroons were able to find a goal from nothing. Captain Boualem Khoukhi met a El-Amin Ahmed cross and fired a bullet header past Gregor Kobel to earn the Arab nation it’s first ever World Cup point.

Murat Yakin’s men perhaps should’ve been out of sight even before half-time. Nottingham Forest forward Dan Ndoye missed a handful of chances to make it 2. He was subbed out on 65 minutes having taken six shots – two of which were on target.

Embolo arguably came the closest to making it two. The Monaco man latched onto a through ball from the exciting substitute Johan Manzambi – but only managed to prod his effort through Abunada’s legs and into the side-netting.

Group B is now left very finely in the balance after one match. All four teams in the group are sat on one point, with one goal scored and one goal conceded.
