Mexico secured top spot in Group A with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Czech Republic, ending the group stage with a perfect record of nine points while eliminating their opponents from the tournament.
The first half was short on quality and chances. Despite their dominance in possession, Mexico failed to register a shot for more than 30 minutes and struggled to break down a stubborn Czech Republic side. Fortunately for the hosts, the Czechs offered little threat themselves and rarely looked capable of testing the goalkeeper in a cagey opening 45 minutes.
The game burst into life after the restart. On 55 minutes, left-back Mateo Chavez popped up in an unexpected attacking position, driving into the penalty area before calmly placing a finish into the bottom-left corner beyond Matej Kovar to break the deadlock.
Just six minutes later, Mexico doubled their advantage. A slick attacking move carved the Czech Republic defence open and Julian Quinones was on hand to force the ball over the line from close range, putting Javier Aguirre’s side firmly in control.
With the result all but secured, Mexico introduced veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa for his 154th international appearance. The 40-year-old, who was part of Mexico’s squads in 2006 and 2010 before starring at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups, received a warm reception from the home supporters.
The celebrations continued deep into stoppage time when Alvaro Fidalgo added a third. The midfielder found space on the edge of the box before producing a clinical finish into the top corner from 18 yards to cap an excellent evening for the hosts.
The final whistle confirmed Mexico’s place in the knockout rounds as Group A winners with three wins from three. Czech Republic, meanwhile, exited the competition after finishing bottom of the group with just one point from their three matches.
