“A shameful display” – Player ratings as Atlético Madrid “Cholo-ball” Manchester United out of the Champions League
Atlético Madrid have knocked Manchester United out of the Champions League with a sensational win at Old Trafford.
Diego Simeone’s men came into the game knowing they needed a result and they got exactly what they came for and in the process provoked one of the most miserable Manchester United performances of the season.
Here’s how the players rated at Old Trafford:

Manchester United
David de Gea – 6 – Great save to keep De Paul out, but was otherwise helpless on the Atleti goal.
Diogo Dalot – 5 – Completely lost Lodi for the opening goal. Did reasonably well after that but he just isn’t very good.
Raphael Varane – 7 – Defended superbly. Constantly moving around to deal with the Atleti threat. Let down by his team-mates.
Harry Maguire – 4 – Consistently stepped out of his back-line, only to not win the ball. This played a part in wrecking the United defensive shape before the Lodi opener and considering that was one of the few times Atleti actually attacked, failing there was colossal.
Alex Telles – 5 – Not good in any traditional sense of the word but full of ideas and intent which is more than can be said for many of his team-mates. Played 11 crosses into the box.
Did Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo make the Champions League quarter-finals?

Scott McTominay – 4 – Not a presence defensively or offensively. A shocking non-performance from a player who can usually at least be relied upon for effort and intensity.
Fred – 7 – A phenomenally dynamic display from the Brazilian midfielder. Involved in most everything for United, and gave us a couple of moments of beautiful skill that took the breath away.
Bruno Fernandes – 7 – Lively and bright in the early going, creating the best chance of the game for Elanga to miss. Created most of United’s other good moments in the game until he was bizarrely subbed off with United chasing a goal.
Anthony Elanga – 4 – Should have given United an early lead when he missed from two yards out, and then failed to track Lodi for the Atleti goal, and also missed a stick-on assist to Fred in the second-half. Couldn’t match his first-leg heroics.
Jadon Sancho – 5 – Some bright dribbling (5/12 take-ons completed) but couldn’t do anything with the ball as Antoine Griezmann was all over him like a rash.
Cristiano Ronaldo – 3 – Was absolutely abysmal. In a game where United needed his goal power he spent the majority of the match out wide on either flank playing make-believe this was 2007 and he still had the skills and speed to make a difference out there.
Cristiano Ronaldo had as many shots against Atlético Madrid as Man Utd will win trophies this season (0). #UCL

Ronaldo ended the match without a single shot, either on or off target. United’s top scorer, main goal threat and the man who has done more damage to Diego Simeone’s European ambitions than anyone else, never even had a shot on goal.
A shameful display that summed player and team up perfectly.

Manchester United Substitutes:
Marcus Rashford (for Elanga 67′) – 4 – Came on with the idea to help, and made things worse as he was asked to play wide right.
Paul Pogba (for Fernandes 67′) – 4 – Killed United’s rhythm and gave away a whole bunch of fouls.
Nemanja Matic (for McTominay 67′) – 5 – Won the ball and drove it forward decently.
Edinson Cavani (for Fred 76′) – 4 – Did nothing when United needed him.
Juan Mata (for Maguire 84′) – n/a – Came on late.
Atlético Madrid
Jan Oblak – 8 – Great save with his head to stop Elanga scoring, big stop to deny Varane and then dominated his area, coming for crosses to take pressure off his defence. A sensational return to form for the Slovenian stopper.
José Giménez – 8 – Colossal. Made a game-high 6 clearances and was just constantly in the way when United tried to make things happen. His return was the difference between Atleti capitulating and holding out.
Stefan Savic – 8 – Calm and composed in the centre of defence.
Reinildo – 7 – Played well yet again.
Marcos Llorente – 8 – Tracked back and tussled with Sancho quite well. Fought every second he was on the pitch.

Hector Herrera – 7 – A Tiago-esque display from the Mexican. Kept things ticking over nicely.
Koke – 7 – Began the match on the back-foot but rebounded so well. Ran himself into the ground until he had to go off with a knock.
Rodrigo de Paul – 8 – Equal parts evil and excellent, giving a superb showing in both faces of Cholismo. Gorgeous forward pass in the move for the goal but also oh so many moments of malarkey.
Renan Lodi – 8 – Made a wonderful raiding run and a composed header at the back-post to give Atleti the lead. Then dug in and defended his flank really well, including a game-high 4 interceptions.
Antoine Griezmann – 8 – A vintage Griezmann display tonight as the Frenchman justified his selection with a magnificent cross to the back-post to set-up Lodi’s opener but then also relentlessly defending his flank and completely neutralising Sancho.
Antoine Griezmann's game by numbers vs. Man Utd:
57 touches
10 passes in the final third
8 possessions won
7 duels won
4 tackles made (=most)
4 final third entries
2 possessions won in the final third
2 chances created

Joao Felix – 7 – Looked bright. Pulled off a beautiful backheel pre-assist for Atleti’s opener.
Substitutes:
Geoffrey Kondogbia (for Koke 80′) – 7 – Maintained stability in midfield.
Felipe (for Joao Felix 90′) – n/a – Came on late.
Angel Correa (for Griezmann 90’+2) – n/a – Came on late.
