Manchester United have announced the appointment of Ajax boss Erik ten Hag as their next manager.

The 52-year-old Dutchman joins the Old Trafford club on a three-year deal with the option of a further 12 months and will replace interim boss Ralf Rangnick at the end of this season, with the latter set to move into a consultancy role.

Ten Hag had been the frontrunner for the position for some time now and speculation has now been put to bed as he is confirmed to be the fifth permanent manager of Man Utd since Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down nearly a decade ago now.

The move from Man Utd’s polarising hierarchy comes just two days after the club were mauled by arch-rivals Liverpool in the Premier League, losing 4-0 at Anfield as Jurgen Klopp’s men ruthlessly exposed the Red Devils’ soft underbelly for the second time this season.

In need of a pick-me-up, Ten Hag has been announced to much fanfare, with many believing his high-pressing, fluid brand of football, as well as philosophy on shrewd recruitment and youth development, is exactly what is required to lift the club out of its current plateauing state.

With that we’ve scoured the internet to find some of the best reaction to Man Utd’s latest managerial appointment, with many optimistic that Ten Hag could be the man capable of scaling the current Premier League heights to place them on a level with Klopp’s Reds and Pep Guardiola’s City.

Following the humiliation against Liverpool in midweek, Ten Hag may actually be able to exact revenge in his first game in charge…

While some are less optimistic that he can produce anything with this current Man Utd squad…

Some questioned the timing of the announcement…

While others went in a different direction…
