Nadal hasn’t won Wimbledon since 2010, and it’s his joint-least favourite Slam alongside the Australian Open with just two victories. However, Nadal has already claimed the Australian Open this year and added his customary French Open, looking to continue his search for the calendar Grand Slam.
The Spanish legend’s Wimbledon has been a mix of Nadal past and present, with some quality play mixed in with lows that come after a career plagued by injuries. In the First Round, Nadal needed four sets to beat Francisco Cerundolo 6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, letting his performance drop slightly in that third set. It was a similar case in the Second Round against Ricardas Berankis as Nadal dropped the third set once again en route to a 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory.
Looking to cause a massive upset in the Third Round is Sonego, who has had two very different matches at Wimbledon so far. Coming into the tournament as 27th seed, Sonego went five sets with Denis Kudla which including a couple of very tight sets, to eventually win 6-7 (6), 6-3, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
But things were a lot more straightforward for Sonego in the Second Round. Taking on unseeded Hugo Gaston, Sonego won in three sets 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-4 to set up this Third Round clash with Nadal – their first ever meeting.
