Liverpool Champions League 2019/20: full squad list, stats, top-scorers & UCL record so far
Liverpool’s squad for the Champions League knockout rounds has been strengthened by the addition of Japanese playmaker, Takumi Minamino.
Having already notched a goal and assist at Anfield for RB Salzburg during the group stages, the 25-year-old sealed a £7.25m switch to Liverpool in January and will be allowed to feature for the Reds following the abolishment of the “cup-tied” rule by Uefa.
Champions League 2019/20: Five things to know about Liverpool…
- Domestic league position: 1st, Premier League
- Champions League finish in 2018/19: Winners (sixth European Cup overall)
- 2019/20 Group finish: 1st (13 points), Group E
- Top scorer: Mohamed Salah (4)
- Most assists: Roberto Firmino (3)
Even without the addition of Minamino, Jurgen Klopp would have more than fancied his chances given his side currently sit a massive 22 points clear of Manchester City atop the Premier League table, having won 24 of their 25 games so far.
Liverpool are breaking all sorts of records domestically and on the European front, their only defeat came in their Group E opener against Napoli way back in September. In fact, that remains their first-team’s only defeat in any competition this season given that their 5-0 League Cup loss to Aston Villa was played out by their U23s.
Under normal circumstances, a last-16 tie against Atletico Madrid would be seen as a nightmare draw. The Spanish side are notoriously hard to break down and can cause trouble for any of Europe’s elite on their day.
However, Diego Simeone’s men are currently languishing way back in sixth in La Liga and are without a win in five; the Argentine is under pressure having failed to replace the attacking edge offered by Antoine Griezmann.
