Jurgen Klopp’s men ran out comprehensive 3-1 victors at the Estadio da Luz last week, taking a two-goal advantage to Anfield after Ibrahima Konate, Sadio Mane and former Porto forward Luis Diaz got on the scoresheet in Lisbon.

Darwin Nunez cut the deficit just after the restart but Nelson Verissimo’s men weren’t able to restore parity and now travel to Merseyside looking to become one of only three clubs ever to win by more than one goal away to Liverpool in the knockout stages of the Champions League. One of those clubs? Benfica in 2005/06…

The Benfica XI is as follows:

Klopp: There could be changes

With the Reds still battling on three fronts, head coach Klopp has hinted there could be changes for this Benfica clash. Liverpool faced Manchester City on Sunday before another showdown against Pep Guardiola’s men in the FA Cup semi-finals this weekend. A first leg advantage has allowed Klopp some breathing room, but he’s stressed his team will be based on how fresh those under him are.

“There is nobody injured as far as I know at this moment, but we need to have a look [at] who is fresh enough for this game and stuff like this because we see it really as a super-important game. I know we are in the world of football where if you win the first leg 3-1 then that means for people who have nothing to do with the game, ‘Yeah, [they are] halfway through,” he told reporters.

“Then you play City left and right of the game and it’s like somebody could be with their focus somewhere else. We see it slightly differently, to be honest. This is a super, super, super, super, super-important game to us and we said it a couple of times: we tried so hard last year to qualify for the Champions League and now we can make it into the semis, which is incredible. And that’s what we want to show tomorrow night, that it means a lot to us.”

Liverpool team news

Fabinho sustained a head injury in the first leg, but he was able to shake it off and star in the weekend’s 2-2 with Manchester City. The Brazilian is, therefore, expected to retain his starting berth here. Klopp may be tempted to rest one of Mane or Diogo Jota, with the duo just one booking away from picking up a suspension and missing a potential semi-final first leg. That could mean Diaz slotting back in, and Roberto Firmino starting.

Benfica team news

Lucas Verissimo and Rodrigo Pinho are currently the only major injury concerns for Benfica. Head coach Nelson Verissimo made a number of changes from the Liverpool defeat to Saturday’s 3-1 win over Belenenses, so some of his key men should be well rested. Rafa Silva and Goncalo Ramos both started on the bench at the weekend, so could come straight back into the team at Anfield, while Verissimo made three defensive tweaks, with Gilberto, Alex Grimaldo and Jan Vertonghen all kept on ice.
