Hernan Crespo believes Lautaro Martinez can follow in the footsteps of Sergio Aguero.

The 22-year-old Argentine marksman is enjoying a prolific campaign with Inter Milan having managed 11 goals in 22 league games under Antonio Conte.

How good is Martinez? Five key things to know…

  • Martinez joined Inter Milan from boyhood club Racing Club in July 2018.
  • He’s since scored 25 goals in 66 matches for the Italian giants.
  • Martinez has been heavily linked with a summer move to Barcelona.
  • Crespo believes the 22-year-old could be the ‘new Sergio Aguero’.
  • To date, Martinez has bagged nine goals in 17 international matches for Argentina.

Martinez joined the Nerazzurri from boyhood club Racing Club in July 2018 and has gone on to register 25 goals across 66 matches.

Before the suspension of the 2019/20 Serie A season, his performances weren’t going unnoticed with Barcelona reportedly keeping close tabs on him.

A move there would subsequently lead to Martinez linking up with compatriot Lionel Messi who, in the past, has spoken glowingly of Inter’s striker.

“He’s spectacular,” Messi said of Martinez earlier this year. “He has impressive qualities. You could tell he was going to be a great player and he is showing that.

“He’s very strong, really good one on one, scores a lot of goals and in the area he fights with anyone, holds it up, he can turn, scrap to win it all on his own. He has a lot of quality. He’s very complete.”

To date, they’ve played eight times together with La Albiceleste and former national team hero Crespo feels with Manchester City centre-forward Aguero entering his twilight years, Martinez could ultimately fill the void he’d eventually leave behind.

“We know Mauro Icardi and Paulo Dybala, while we’re getting to see what Lautaro Martinez can do,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“Lautaro could well be the new Sergio Aguero. He’s not as sharp in his dribbling, but he is more of a team player than Kun, who too often gets distracted and looks disinterested.

“Lautaro is always participating in the move, so he can play as a lone centre-forward or with another striker like Romelu Lukaku, even in a trident. I really like his mentality.”
