The 2021/22 La Liga season is underway without the reigning Pichichi holder Lionel Messi.

The Argentine legend stunned the footballing world after sealing a move to PSG in the summer, meaning we will have a new Pichichi holder come the end of the season, with the former Barca forward winning the top scorer award in each of the past five seasons and eight times in total, more than any other player.

Last season, Messi was the only player to hit the 30-goal mark in La Liga (with 30, in 35 games), and finished seven goals clear of Villarreal’s Gerard Moreno and Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema.

With Messi gone, Benzema has taken early control of the 2021/22 Pichici race, netting eight goals in his opening six appearances, including a hat-trick in Real Madrid’s 5-2 win over Celta Vigo.

Will Benzema keep his grips on the Pichichi race throughout the season? Or will a new name emerge to succeed Messi? Keep track of the top 10 leading scorers below as the 2021/22 campaign progresses.
