With so much focus now on goalkeepers being the first point of attack, it’s easy to forget the job they’re primarily there to do: keep the ball out of the net.
A number of the world’s best goalkeepers have plied their trade in La Liga over the years, from Real Madrid’s Iker Casillas to Andoni Zubizarreta, who is the Spanish top-flight’s appearance record holder with 622 outings across spells with Athletic Bilbao, Barcelona and Valencia.
That continues to be the case today. Just last season, Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak topped the goalkeeping pile for saves and clean sheets in La Liga, while Thibaut Courtois wasn’t far behind in either metric. Then, of course, there’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who kept 11 clean sheets in 31 appearances before seeing his season cut short through injury.
