FIFA 21 is getting closer, but that doesn’t mean you should forget about FIFA 20 as Career Mode still provides a way to keep the game fresh.

But who do you have in goal for your title-chasing squads? You could have the best defence in the world, but if you haven’t got a goalkeeper worth his salt, it can be pointless.

To have the perfect team you need the right goalkeeper. Do you want to play it out from the back? Then you’ll need a goalkeeper who’s good on the ball. Often find your defence being breached? Get a goalkeeper that’s used to being the hero.

But who is the right goalkeeper for you in FIFA 20 Career Mode?

We’ve taken a look at some of the best options across an array of transfer fees to make your job just a bit easier in the first window – meaning some star men currently on loan spells miss out, as do those who recently joined their clubs. We only ask for a thank you in your press conferences after the league has been won.

Values and presence of release clauses may vary per save. All prices correct at the time of publishing on 03/08/2020.

FIFA 20 best goalkeepers to sign on Career Mode – Under £1m

Lucas Chevalier (Lille)

We start our journey in France with Lucas Chevalier, a young goalkeeper who has the potential to be a decent addition to any side.

FIFA 20 Career Mode Goalkeepers: If you're patient, Lucas Chevalier can become a decent addition to your FIFA 20 side.

If you’re patient, Lucas Chevalier can become a decent addition to your FIFA 20 side.

The 18-year-old starts FIFA 20 with a rating of 61, so won’t be an immediate starter for the bigger clubs, but is certainly a solid purchase if you’re working in the lower leagues. His goalkeeping stats are respectable for his rating, including 62 kicking and reflexes, but the big seller here is his potential overall of 84. Although it will be a slog, it’s worth getting Chevalier, valued at £425k, for the slightly lower price of £400k.

Inaki Pena (Barcelona)

If you’re at a club with extremely limited funds and want a player that won’t necessarily outgrow you, go for Inaki Pena.

FIFA 20 Career Mode Goalkeepers: Inaki will not be a world beater, but can still be a solid goalkeeper.

Inaki Pena will not be a world beater, but can still be a solid goalkeeper.

The Barcelona shot-stopper starts FIFA 20 with a respectable rating of 65, with 67 reflexes and 66 diving. He also boasts three-star weak foot, which will undoubtedly help under pressure. Unlike the previous two, Pena will only rise to 79 overall but unless you’re a massive club, that rating will be good enough. Pena is valued at £900k and can have a release clause of £2.4m, but don’t rush into it, as Barcelona will actually accept around £820k.

Maarten Vandevoordt (Genk)

Champions League fans may remember Maarten Vandevoordt for his unfortunate debut against Napoli in 2019/20, but the goalkeeper is a solid buy on FIFA 20.

FIFA 20 Career Mode Goalkeepers: Maarten Vandevoordt is a useful option from the start and will only grow.

Maarten Vandevoordt is a useful option from the start and will only grow.

Vandevoordt, 17, is initially rated at 65 with 69 reflexes and 68 diving, meaning he will already prove to be useful open his signing. And these stats will only grow if he reaches his potential overall of 85, not to mention the number of years you’ll have him for. Despite his promise, Genk will be fine in selling at value of £950k.

Diogo Costa (Porto)

Moving slightly up the price range, but still available at a relatively low price is Diogo Costa.

FIFA 20 Career Mode Goalkeepers: Diogo Costa can be a starting goalkeeper or impressive back-up option.

Diogo Costa can be a starting goalkeeper or impressive back-up option.

The 20-year-old has a decent initial rating of 70, which includes 73 reflexes and 71 positioning, two of the more important goalkeeper stats. If you use him well, Costa can rise to 82, becoming a solid option for most teams, either as a starting goalkeeper or impressive back-up. He is valued at £2.2m but Porto will allow him to leave for around £2m.

Wuilker Farinez (Millonarios)

If you’re looking for a more established goalkeeper with a lot of room to grow, take a trip to Colombian side Millonarios and take a look at Wuilker Farinez.

FIFA 20 Career Mode Goalkeepers: Take advantage of Wuilker Farinez's contract expiration to buy a good goalkeeper cheap.

The Venezuelan has an initial rating of 73, including 77 reflexes and 74 positioning, not to mention his three-star weak football. But that’s not the main selling point, his potential overall rating of 86 is, becoming one of the top goalkeepers in Career Mode. Farinez has 12 months remaining on his contract as you start a new Career Mode so can be bought for just above his value of £7.5m if you don’t want to take a risk and wait.

Alexander Nubel (Schalke)

Alexander Nubel be at Bayern Munich now but FIFA 20 still recognises him as a Schalke player with an expiring contract, so snap the goalkeeper up.

FIFA 20 Career Mode Goalkeepers: He'll be Bayern Munich's in FIFA 21 but add Alexander Nubel to your FIFA 20 Career Mode team.

He’ll be Bayern Munich’s in FIFA 21 but add Alexander Nubel to your FIFA 20 Career Mode team.

Nubel’s initial rating is already a decent level at 75 but his reflexes are quite a bit higher at 85, seven more than his next-best goalkeeping stat of 76 positioning. These will grow alongside Nubel as he reaches his 85 potential overall, joining his five-star weak foot. As mentioned, his contract expires in 12 months meaning you can get him for lower around £8.5m.

FIFA 20 best goalkeepers to sign on Career Mode for £10m-£20m

Agustin Rossi (Lanus)

Most of the goalkeepers on this list are from European clubs, but taking a quick trip back to South America, Agustin Rossi represents a decent goalkeeping option.

FIFA 20 Career Mode Goalkeepers: Agustin Rossi will be a fairly commanding presence in the box.

Agustin Rossi will be a fairly commanding presence in the box.

The 23-year-old starts FIFA 20 with an overall of 77, aided by 70+ stats in all goalkeeping attributes including 78 positioning. Rossi also stands at 6’4″ so will be a fairly commanding presence, especially as he grows closer to his potential overall of 82. The goalkeeper is valued at £8m and while Lanus want more, they will settle for around £12.5m.

Unai Simon (Athletic Bilbao)

La Liga has been home to some of the most promising goalkeepers over the years and it’s no different with Unai Simon.

FIFA 20 Career Mode Goalkeepers: Strike quickly for Unai Simon before Athletic Bilbao put a €75m release clause on him a la Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The 22-year-old has an initial rating of 79, enough to fit in at many clubs straight away. Simon boasts 83 positioning and 81 reflexes, which will work well alongside his 6’3″ frame, a decent height for a goalkeeper. The Spaniard has the potential to grow to 85 overall and his valued at £11.5m, but Bilbao will want around £17m for the shot-stopper. Best to strike early before they put a €75m release clause on him…

Alex Meret (Napoli)

Moving up the list of goalkeepers to have already established themselves, next up is Alex Meret who is enjoying himself with Napoli.

FIFA 20 Career Mode Goalkeepers: Given Alex Meret's high potential, Napoli's asking price of £19m is a must-do deal.

Given Alex Meret’s high potential, Napoli’s asking price of £19m is a must-do deal.

The 78-rated goalkeeper is still just 22 but has 82 reflexes and 79 diving, as well as 77 positioning. These attributes will grow alongside Meret as he reaches his overall potential of 87, with only a few goalkeepers ending with a higher rating. Given his high potential, Meret’s value of £11m looks pretty low and even with Napoli wanting around £19m, this is still a must-do deal.

Mike Maignan (Lille)

Moving into the bank-breakers, we start with Mike Maignan who can still be bought for a respectable price.

FIFA 20 Career Mode Goalkeepers: Mike Maignan represents a solid goalkeeping option from the start of FIFA 20.

Mike Maignan represents a solid goalkeeping option from the start of FIFA 20.

The 23-year-old represents a solid option from the start with an overall rating of 82, consisting of 83 reflexes and 82 kicking. Maignan doesn’t grow too much, compared to others on the list, but his potential overall of 86 is still high enough for the Frenchman to be one of the top goalkeepers. He is valued at £19.5m but it will take around £27m to pry him from Lille’s hands.

Gianluigi Donnarumma (AC Milan)

Of course, Gianluigi Donnarumma was going to feature on the list, as one of the best young goalkeepers on FIFA 20.

FIFA 20 Career Mode Goalkeepers: Only two goalkeepers have a higher potential overall than Gianluigi Donnarumma on FIFA 20.

Only two goalkeepers have a higher potential overall than Gianluigi Donnarumma on FIFA 20.

Despite being just 20, the Italian already boasts an overall of 85 with diving and reflexes at 89 – only his kicking (76) is below 80 among his goalkeeping attributes. Donnarumma then has the potential to rise to 92 in Career Mode, becoming one of the top three goalkeepers in the game. Naturally, he’ll set you back a bit with AC Milan wanting around £54m – despite his initial value of £37.5m.

Jan Oblak (Atletico Madrid)

If you’ve got a lot money to spend, and want to use it on a goalkeeper, then put all your eggs in Jan Oblak’s basket.

FIFA 20 Career Mode Goalkeepers: Jan Oblak is the best goalkeeper in FIFA 20 and can reach 93 overall in Career Mode.

Jan Oblak is the best goalkeeper in FIFA 20 and can reach 93 overall in Career Mode.

The Atletico Madrid shot-stopper is the best goalkeeper in FIFA 20 with an overall rating of 91 which includes 92 handling and 90 positioning. Despite his already high rating, Oblak can still get higher, with a potential overall of 93 – no goalkeeper has higher. And, at 26, Oblak will have a good 10 years left in him at least. He’s valued at £69.5m and can have a release clause of £147.7m but Atletico will be kind and accept £100m – we told you he costs a lot, but he’d be worth it.
